Into the Wormcan, and Curse the Pain
I know you're probably sick to death of hearing about same-sex marriage, and please don't take offense at any opinions you hear on this - we're all civilized enough to argue peacefully.
To throw in my two cents I can sum up my attitude in two or three statements:
REMOVE ALL PRESENT, AND BAN ANY FUTURE LAWFUL DEFINITION OF *MARRIAGE*
ADOPT ASEXUAL LIFELONG DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP
HONOR EXISTING AND FUTURE COMMITMENTS of domestic partnerships, whether they are termed marriages or not.
Marriage is a religious commitment and has no value in government except towards making any legal statements concerning rights of inheritance, child welfare, tax, and estate issues more CONVENIENT. Let's DO THE WORK and make the laws ALL-ENVELOPING regardless of the age or gender of the people involved (in other words spell it out. Mathematically speaking this could yield legal documentation four time the size of its predecessor but it's worth it and gives lawmakers something to do instead of campaigning). Note that this succeeds in ignoring the sexual orientation of all concerned and so does not conflict with any issue of rights gay or otherwise. Any conflict that surfaces simply exposes anachronistic laws that are unconstitutional given the MISSING AMENDMENT concerning Women's Equality anyway.
ALL OTHER court decisions fail to do this (even the ones that allowed gay marriages to happen last month!), and that's precisely why it's on the front page of all the newspapers.
Take the ammo away from the conservatives by giving marriage back to the church (which by the way INVENTED marriage) and leaving them with it. Gay marriages would cease to be any more controversial than the issue of eating a little wafer during mass. Some will do it, some won't. Some will bear fruit, some won't.
I support UPHOLDING the Nineteenth Amendment and carrying forth its spirit by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender, and that means MARRIAGE as defined by any administration of religious faith.
Further, I support NO CONSTITUTIONAL WORDING that discriminates a man from a woman in any way, shape or form. It hasn't been there for over two hundred years, and no multi-million dollar fiasco of election-year pique should have the power to change it.
