Book Drive Progress [updated]

The US Military Book drive donations from Conclave have arrived at our staging base in Arkansas, and they've been done up for distribution to about seventeen installations in the Middle East and supporting locations elsewhere. The book shipment to Arkansas weighs in at roughly 670 pounds*. All logistics from Romulus to Hindsville were funded entirely by Archangel Press and executed by SPAC. M Keaton is coordinating the distribution from there, and we at SP and TriTac are also assembling postal packages for straggler donations made here since October 14th, totaling an additional seventy pounds of books, audio books, and related periodicals. [* update: At the new year our final figures hover around 1100 pounds and three dozen destinations!~ed.]

From the initial money donations at the Conclave raffle and SP's matching funds we accumulated 15% of the total expected postage costs from Arkansas on out for the book drive, which will ensure that several MBags will be sent out in time for Christmas. As other fundraisers are pulled together between now and ConFusion, we expect to have many more packages on the way before then. MichiganFandom is formulating additional fundraising efforts for postage and also making inquiries into further contributions from conventions and fannish communities going into 2008, so watch this channel for more news.

Thanks to our organizers: M Keaton and Cheryl Keaton at AP, the Hindsville Post Office and Postmaster, Richard Tucholka at TriTac Systems, Anne Zanoni for stacking, lugging and sorting, Navy Cadets, Steve and Jenna Hoyer and Tiff and Geoff Lamb for secure storage at Conclave Operations, the Crowne Plaza for raffle prizes, Tom Barber for Dealer Room space, and all SPAC's authors for sitting in at the donation table to make it fun for people to hang around and donate. Special thanks to Patricia and Tara for having the faith, interest and connections to push really good new ideas like this.

On behalf of the organizers of this momentous community effort, I thank our hosts and their entire membership for giving us a fabulous head start on a noble and noteworthy cause.

Thanks Conclave!
